OT: Colonial Williamsburg

We went in March of 2005. Stayed at the Woodlands. It was a normal suites hotel, like an Amerisuites. Continental breakfast every morning. Staying on-site made access to the Colonial area VERY easy.

There is SO much to see. We spent 2 whole days and still missed a few things. Don't miss Chownings in the evening! If you have kids (or are a kid [img]wink.gif[/img] ) take colonial dress-up outfits! It makes it MUCH more fun. Carriage rides are EXPENSIVE but a must for the total experience. Evening programs are GREAT.

Williamsburg is GREAT! I don't have any hotel pictures since I live 2 hrs away, but did you see TD Cambria's new pictures in my signature? Since my parents live there, we didn't need a hotel room either. I think staying as close to Williamsburg would be ideal. If you really want a true "experience" and money isn't a problem, the Willaimsburg Inn is just lovely. I have stayed there several times, and it is a true step back in time. The Marriot at Kingsmill is nice, but you would have to drive to town...it isn't far. I have heard of the place someone else mentioned above, and it had good reviews as well. The places right around WIlliamsburg book very quickly, so you may want to check out thier site to see what is available. There is also a watercountry type hotel...I can't remember it's name, but it is really busy everytime we go by. It has an indoor waterpark, so great if you have kids. There is so much to do around that areas too. You must see Jamestown, and Busch Gardens is also so fun, and so close, you can't miss them. I agree with wearing the Colonial attire too, very fun.

PS The carriage ride is really a must. We love one driver in particular, her name is Eliza, but since she shouldn'y be a girl driving the carriage the call her Eli. She loves AG dolls and had several growing up! :-) You have to get in line at the crack of dawn to get the carriage ride, they are very popular, but it is worth it.

I've been there many times and love it! We've stay at the colonial houses I think 3 times and I think the Williamsburg Inn once. Staying at the houses is so cool! Its like you're actually going back in time. You can wake up and just go outside and visit shops and be like someone who really lives there. Its really cool. We're booked to go to Williamsburg in June. I thought children could rent costumes while there? Has anyone done this? Any other must see or do?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Yes, children CAN rent costumes. I haven't actually seen girls do it, but the rental place is right in the visitor's center. You can't miss it when you walk in.

I went on a trip there in Summer of '04 and we did the Triangle package which gives you an on site hotel, with passes to Williamsburg and Jamesburg. All in all it was a wonderful experience (darn can't remeber the name of the place we stayed, but it was a pretty nice hotel that was part of the official ones and we got breakfast included and shuttle to the visitor's center), and it was very reasonable as well.

If you're planning on renting costumes I would call and ask a few questions. Admittedly, we went 10 months ago, so things may have changed, but at that time here was the scoop.

1) You could only rent costumes in market square.

2) They were $25/day. (Since we were there for 2 days that would have been $50/girl, and a seamstress can make you one for that that she can have for dress-up later!)

3) They only had solid white "dresses" that looked more like a shift in certain sizes. (The little kid sizes had a little more variety, but there still weren't many.)

4) They had to be turned in before the evening programs began. [img]eek.gif[/img]

I would imagine this stuff varies throughout the year. We went for spring break, and it's possible that because the hours weren't long like in summer, the rental booth also wasn't open as long. We had a wonderful seamstress make outfits for our dd's and were SO glad we did. I made the suggestion to the friends we went with to do the same. They didn't and regretted it BIGTIME! We found that our dd's wore the outfits again for halloween, had ones that fit, wore them to evening programs (like the colonial dance which was amazing!), and looked MUCH cuter than the people who rented costumes.
